YOUTH PROGRAMS STUDENT EXPERIENCES
Wendy Wright was born and raised in Hinckley, Utah, a town of 650 people.
“When I was 11 years old my grandfather had a stroke. He was admitted to a large hospital in the city. Unfortunately, some of the nurses were very cold and did not understand how much
Grandpa meant to my family and me. I knew right then that I wanted to grow up and care for people with the compassion I so desperately needed when Grandpa was in the hospital,” Wendy recalls.
“When I was in high school I enrolled and became involved in the ‘Health Occupations Students
of America, Delta Chapter.’ At the state HOSA event, I qualified to attend the national convention in California. I had never been on an airplane. With AHEC’s financial support, I
went to the HOSA convention where I learned about a whole big world of health care professions.”
Wendy quickly completed training as a Certified Nursing Assistant and began working at the
West Millard Care Center. With this job in mind she set high goals.
“Thanks to AHEC I am enrolled at the Weber State University extension in Cedar City. I will
get my LPN this year and my RN next year. My goal is to get my master’s degree and become a Nurse Practitioner. I want to work in critical care, and I definitely want to stay in a small town
community like the one I grew up in.”
