Access

High school science department chairs, AP math and science instructors urge talented, graduating female seniors, who have shown an interest in science, to apply for the Access Scholarship. During the summer prior to the first collegiate academic year, Access women enroll in an “Integrated Science” general education course.  The calendar of this summer course is adjusted to deal with the mismatch between the end of the high school year and the University’s summers schedule. This course is taught by faculty from all departments in the College of Science and from faculty in the departments in the College of Engineering.  Toward the end of the course, students indicate an area in which they would like to conduct research. Near the end of their first semester at the University, they are placed in labs working while it exposes the students to a variety of sciences and technical disciplines. One attraction is the $2500 stipend offered to cover much of the first year expenses of an incoming University student. For more information, please contact Sid Rudolph, Department of Physics and Director of the ACCESS Program at 581-4803 and look at the ACCESS web page, http://www.science.utah.edu/access.html.
